1994

The University of Derna was established by Decision No. (858) of 1994 by the Secretary of the General People's Committee in the city of Derna. It was established to support scientific and cultural advancement and development.

Before 1994

Before this date, the city of Derna included three colleges affiliated with Omar Al-Mukhtar University, which opened in the academic year 1991/1992: (Economics and Accounting / Architecture and Arts / Medical Technology).

Establishment Details

When Decision No. (858) of 1994 was issued to establish the independent University of Derna, it included a number of colleges existing in the city of Tobruk (Arts / Engineering) and also included (College of Arts / College of Law in Derna), bringing the total number of colleges to seven, and the number of students to 8000 students.

1999

Decision No. 281 of 1999 was issued regarding the reorganization of universities, merging the University of Derna with Omar Al-Mukhtar University to become one university spread between Al-Bayda, Derna and Tobruk.

2000

The idea of branch universities was proposed to alleviate congestion at the main universities and solve chronic problems. Decision No. 308 of 2000 was issued to establish the University of Derna as an independent entity administratively following the People's Committee of Derna.

2005

A decision was issued regarding the reorganization of universities, merging the University of Derna with Omar Al-Mukhtar University to become one university.

2021

Decision No. 207 of 2021 was issued by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research regarding the separation of the branches of the University of Derna and Al-Qubbah from Omar Al-Mukhtar University and the re-establishment of the university under the name of the University of Derna as an independent legal entity financially and administratively.
